The thing that bothers me the most right now is housing. My wife called the housing office and was told their was a 6-12 month wait... should I look for a apartment or house and try to get that together before we arrive or wait till we get their and then search. Also does nyone know if a motorcycle can be included in hhg's.

My 8 year SSgt just got a $71.5K bonus and orders to KBay.. He bought a new Suzuki (cash, of course) and it has already been shipped to Hawaii...

Not sure if you have kids or not, but I took this pic in March just south of KBay- a cozy little 'cottage'... heck- $2300/mo? Thats only about $28,000.00 a year...
im gettin ready to pcs there as well. since on post housing availability being unlikely, just wait til you get there and request permissive tdy(which when you are married is almost a guarantee youll get it.) this will giv eyou 10 days to search for a home. in the mean time call ahead before you get there and try to reserve a room at onpost lodging for when you go through integration.
also to look for homes ahead of time go to ahrn.com
property office can tell you what needs to be done to your motorcycle before you ship it. ahrn.com is a good site for looking at houses, some of your cheaper housing will be farther away from base and traffic on kbay side is not to bad. if you have any modifications that could affect the handling of your jeep, you will need to have it inspected at the recon station. the good news, its only $25 for non resident military to register a vehicle, just need the paper from your command.

I hope none of you are ordered to joining 1/12.

I see little has changed about housing in Hawai'i since I was there 25 years ago. What worked for me was to get on the housing list, live in the barracks (I was at Schofield, so the barracks were the 19th century wonders that have been seen in movies), and then get the family command-sponsored over later - it took about 4 months to move up and get a slot, but what I ended up with was worth it.
How different is it going to be? Off post housing, if you have the resources, purchasing a property is a good thing... an old Sgt Major I served with did that, as did a Lt. Col. I worked with in later years.
One last piece of advice. It's a small island, you can drive all the way around it in less than a day. Take your time, explore bits and pieces as family outings and enjoy. Every 1000 yards or so of beach is a totally different world as you go around the island. It's well worth exploring.
Good luck, and thank you for serving!
