My wife is from the Lawton/Ft Sill area and is really wanting to move back. Is there anything going on there? By the time I get out Ill have 9 years in the Navy as an AO. Does anyone know if they have any civilian contractor type work out there? How is life in general out there? How is the wheeling?
Nothing ever going on at Fort Sill except lots of noise.
Yes, there are civilian contracting jobs available. In fact, that area is actually growing as far as jobs go. Life in general is boring. Not much to do without "getting out of town." I can't speak for the wheeling though, as I've only been there TDY.

The wheeling in the immediate area sucks. The most active 4x4 club in the area is in Witchita Falls, TX (About 45 miles south). The closest wheeling is Disney, OK and Clayton, OK. Check out the Texoma Off-Road Club site for the latest and greatest info. www.torc4x4.org (http://www.torc4x4.org)

What is the town like tho
Small.
Typical "Military town." Fast food joints, bars, strip clubs and pawn shops. But they do have a casino.

There's at least three casinos in the immediate area. Two Comanche, one Apache.
Lawton itself is kind of a pit. A lot of little gang-banger wannabes. I would suggest living in Cache, Elgin or maybe Duncan. That way you're not too far from the shopping in Lawton, but not too close, either. The neighborhood I lived in was OK, but just a few blocks away it was pretty slummy.

Well the wife lived there most of her life. That was one of the main reasons for moving to Lawton. She knows a bunch of people that are there
Tell her to get over it and find a better place to live...

Yeah and then have my balls uncerimoniously removed with a butter knife and fed to the dogs.
I think I will be going there on leave just to check out the area. nothing is set in stone yet.
With a butter knife??!!??

Yeah I value my juevos. I mean is Lawton really that bad?

No it's not that bad. In fact I want to return to Fort Sill after I'm done with recruiting. I probably won't live right in Lawton again, but a smaller town nearby. All in all, the area isn't bad. Seriously, by biggest complaint would be lack of forests and lakes, and the long hot summers, but I've been spoiled in Minnesota for the past year and a half!

Nothing wrong with long hot summers. Id rather sweat my ass off than freeze it off. Does the area get any snow? I grew up in Jersey so Im used to snow but have been spoiled cause it has snowed about 5-10 times in the last 8 years in va beach

They do get some snow and ice. Usually only an inch or two at a time and it melts in a day or two. I did build a snowman once. The winters or usually cold and rainy with a piercing wind.

tell those other people to get out while they still can! i've been here 2.5 years, the town is god-awful. Once you get your Ft. Sill hunt/fish license you can go just about anywhere in your jeep. 93,000 acres of hunting, that quite frankly is not too bad. I'll check out with a "scouting" or "fishing" pass and then just drive up and down trails looking for places to get stuck or broken. When it rains there is plenty of mud... when it rains
