Water fording can cost you......just ask around and you will find the guy who turned his Jeep into a submarine. I have broken most of the rules listed here before I knew they were rules. Looking back I was probably lucky....but it sure was fun at the moment.
As you read through this, keep an open mind to various water depths, environments, vehicles, etc. Somethings are only suitable for some serious deep water fording (tarping the front comes to mind) while other items apply each and every time. There is a lot that could be added here and there...use it as a basic guide and build upon it.
Some other items that are not listed here that should be applied to expedition planning (or tactical operations) when you have to do a deep water fording in high mountain areas. Cross in the early morning hours....yes, get up and then cross after a good nights sleep. Not because you need a full nights sleep to do this but the high mountain snow melts that feed that waterway will re-freeze overnight thus reducing the amount of runoff and lower the water level. Cross that evening after a full days melt then you will have to deal with deeper water.
