    Default 97 TJ AC Bypass

It is the 2.5l and the AC compressor needs to be replaced (seizing up and making screetching sounds. Anyone familar with this knows that this is a pricey part. I was about to replace the worn serpintine belt also and notice they sell the belt for TJs with and without AC.

My question is could I bypass the AC by purchasing the belt for the TJ w/o AC? If so is there anything else that I would need. Some one I talked to mentioned an Idler Pulley?? Just trying to find out if this is possible and if anyone has done this. Thanks in advance

Don't know anything about the process, but do you know anyone at a local jeep dealership? Some may have been known to allow customers to swap out parts on the clunker models they have waiting around to be trashed.

I bypassed mine on my old TJ. Just do what you said and buy the non AC belt. There should be two diagrams under the hood for running belts.

Great, thanks for the quick response. Next question is...once I bypass the AC compressor will the Compressor still be powered or is it the belt that powers the compressor. Stupid question Im sure. Thanks again!

Got it all replaced. Thanks for the help. I could be wrong but it seems like the engine isnt straining as much now. Maybe this freed up some power in my little 4 banger.

Yes it does... But in the OP case is not worth to fix the compressor clutch and turn it in to an air compressor...
