    Default Tow rig problems

Driving home from Rausch Creek Saturday pulling my trailer and TJ, about 5 miles from home, I started hearing a knocking/tapping sound from under the hood. A few minutes latter the Check Engine Light came on. I pulled into a rest area and open the hood to see if there was any visible problems. When I checked the Oil, it showed "ADD", however it still showed about 1 1/2" of oil on the stick. I just had an oil change less than a month ago. No oil seems to be leaking and I checked the radiator and overflow bottle to make sure there was no oil there. I added oil when I got home and it's not leaking, and she starts up good except for the Check Engine light is still on. I have to take it in for it's yearly DMV inspection shortly, and I'll have them run the diagnostics and turn the light off. Anything else I should look for before I go to inspection, that may have caused the knocking/tapping. It's a '97 Ram 1500 w/318 and 195,000 miles on it.

Like a spun rod bearing knock/tap? or quieter?

I had an old car that had a quieter knockin/tapping noise, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me what it was. I eventually found out that the bearings on my alternator were going out. They eventually seized and left me sitting in a Wendy's drive-thru.

Not really sure what exactly it could be, though. Like the post above me said, was it a louder knocking, or more quiet?

If the knock is a hard knock the check engine light could be the knock sensor. while running does it have all the power or feel restricted. If knock sensor detects knock it will go into safe mode.

Again is it a loud hard knock that goes with rpms or a steady knock.

    more info needed to diagnose.

It was a real loud knocking/tapping. I was on a uphill section of I-80 running about 65 and pushing the pedal to the floor to keep up speed when it started knocking. When I leveled off and backed off the pedal the knocking stoped and the engine light came on. I pulled over and let it sit for awhile (15 Mins.), and nursed it the last 5 miles to the house at around 40mph and no knocking. When I start it up now, there's no knocking, but it feels like it wants to stall but giving it a few pumps on the gas and she runs OK.

hmm, i had something like that happen before. the thermostat shit the bed, engine was overheating, didnt know it. oil got so hot, it pretty much turned into water, and started knocking horrible. let it cool down, limped it home, replace the thermostat, and a new temp gauge, good as new. I dunno tho, could be anything from overheat, to not enough oil, or just too thin of oil. I'm crazy stupid with oils tho, if i take the jeep home to PA i change the oil, just for temperature difference. . .i dont know of any vehicle that will put itself in safe mode for a knock sensor, it'll retard the timing to level out performance till it gets the right spark knock, but thats about it. knock sensor is just an economy thing. as far as i've known, it is just a sensor to allow the computer on the edge of almost pinging, to sound decent, and still run ok.

Funny thing is none of the dash gauges showed anything wrong, oil gauge was just over the middle number, water gauge showed 210. Only thing was the knocking/tapping and the "Check Engine Light".
