    Default auto trans wont engage

i have a buddy with an 06 wrangler, L6, Auto trans. he called me and asked if i knew why when he put it in gear nothing happened? i told him to make sure his transfer case wasnt in neutral and then to check the linkage. can anyone else think of a reason this would happen. he doesnt wheel this thing often and when he does he doesnt wheel it hard. any help would be great. thanks.

    What led up to this?
Was it running fine one afternoon and then the next morning it just wouldn't work?
Does he have a funny friend that pulled his driveshaft out?
Has he tried putting it into 4hi and moving?
    Grinding, noises, check engine light?

he went to bestbuy this afternoon and when he got back in it it happened. not the driveshaft as the reverse lights dont come on when he puts in in reverse. he tried 4 hi and nothing happened. no noise lights no nothing. i just talked to him again. he said the shifter just slides around after you go past reverse. im thinkin its his shifter linkage. i think its cable actuated and maybe the cable broke or came lose.

Tell him to order chinese and keep the chop sticks.
    Assuming that's his problem.

Check his Auto Tranny Fluid. If it's low it won't shift.

    There are different issues here.
    (1) Check transfer case make sure is in gear (2 high)(4 high) or (4 Low)

    (2) Check the linkage (Put it in park...suppose to lock up)
Then put it neutral (Push and see if it roll)
Have someone to look on the left side of the tranny for linkage
lever at tranny for movement while you shift back and fort.

    (3) Check the Fluid

    (4) This is a very rare issue but I have seen it happen
Check your "Torque Converter Bolts"(Like I stated very rare occasion)
If all those bolts are gone...The tranny will not go anywhere.

The back-up light is electric ( Also an indicative of bad linkage adjustment)

    Good Luck
