Not really. The Commander does offer a third row seat so it seats seven vs. five in the Grand Cherokee, but the way the back seat is configured the Grand Cherokee has a little more leg room. We have the '06 Commander with the 4.7L and it is a great vehicle, but the mileage is not what they advertise, we get about 14 mpg in town and 17 on the hwy. I know people with the Grand Cherokee and they are getting 16 in town and 19 on the hwy.

The choice between the Commander and the GC all depends on the quantity of people you want to haul around. I have 5 kids - I needed the full seven seats. Yes, the back row is tight, great for kids - not so much for adults and mid to late teens. Off road capability is about the same.

Why not just trade up to a 4 door JK?

If you're going to get the Commander, you can't go wrong with the 5.7 HEMI and the QDII Transmission.

Id get the Commander. I was a trail guide for Camp Jeep 2007 in VA and I watched 2 German engineers (Was still Daimler Chrysler back then) wheel a stock Commander like they stole it.

I was actually pretty impressed at what it could do offroad. AEV/Superlift makes a pretty good lift and other goodies for it to make it a true overland performer.
05 LJ Unlimited Rubicon. RE 3.5" short arm lift. 1" body and motor mount lift. 35" BFG M/T KMII's. 5.13 gears. Skid row and Jeep Medic belly up skid plates. Rokmen and Jeeperman bumpers. PSC rockers and full corners. Line X'd interior. Warn 9.5ti. Dual batteries. Dual tops. Snorkel. Full and half doors.
