Usually Search and Rescue groups are part of the Sheriffs Department. I know here in Pierce County, there is a specific volunteer 4x4 SAR group. I've just started to get involved and have taken the first few classes. Now I just have to wait for the periodic group class to get started. There is good information on the pcsar4x4.org site for the kits they require for their volunteers and their vehicles.

Same here, we have the St. Louis County Sherrifs Dept Search & Rescue.

It's run through the Sherrifs dept, but is made up of all volunteers, and run mostly on donations and some grant money.

They also cover more than just our county (which is the largest in MN)

They do great work. I've helped them on a few things, like using my Jeep to get people to the hospital, and get medical/infant supplies to folks stranded during blizzards.

I've also helped out the Consevation Officers a few times, helped with 2 searches, and got the CO and a first responder back into a cabin over a mile into the woods. Then brought the guy who was hurt out to the road to meet the ambulance.

They have big trucks, quads and snowmobiles, but sometimes you just need a short wheelbase rig, like a JEEP

It's a great feeling when the CO says, "I get the feeling you've done this before!"

Check your area for S & R group, First Responders Group, or check with the Sherrifs office.
Most will gladly take the help (I have heard stories of them refusing, and that sucks)
We have a lot of First Responders here also, becuase of the rural areas.

If you go through them, then you're not 'In the way'

I know here, for some positions, they require you to take some courses, but there are always things that need done. It may not require you use your Jeep everytime, but it's good to help out.
