Talked to the guy who owns the CJ with hinged fenders. He says:

"Yes. It's very convenient. If I were to do it again I'd look at getting better hinges or maybe even use CJ door hinges so that the fenders could be easily removed by simply lifting them up."

All I asked was if he still thought it was a good mod. I like how he thought of the door hinges. If you had hood pins, you could just pop your entire fender assembly off for wheeling instead of tearing them up. Thoughts?

i feel special i have a post titled in my name

popping them off would be cool you wouldn't have to worrie about over stuffing your tires in the fenders on an extreme flex situation (in the front any way) the only thing i see bad about using door hinges would be if they were loose fitting the fenders could slip out if you hit a bump too hard (maybe) if the wing nut came off the the only thing holding the front end tight would be the hood latch in the middle of the hood and we all know how well those keep the hood closed...lol

im gonna do it to my cj i don't know what hinges im gonna use i thought about trying some hood hinges or tailgate hinges but i dont know.. i do know i will use a hood latch like the Tj's use instead of wing nuts like he did in his writeup and i plan on using a thin strip of weather stripping were the fender meets the grill so it dose not rattle.

for those of you all who read this and wonder WTF were talking about here is a link to the mod happy reading

Well, the front of the fenders are still bolted to the grill right? If so, then the hood would hold the back and middle down easily. The door hinges are easily an inch deep, so it'd have to move the entire grill, hood, and fenders up an inch to have them pop off. If I were to do it, I'd be going door hinges. Then you could stuff your jeep with way oversize tires for the drive out, pop the fenders off for wheeling, and pop them back on for street legality again. Just a thought.

in his writeup he uses 2 wing nuts on each side to bolt the front of the fenders to the grill.. thats why i was saying i was gonna use something like these hood latches from a Tj
use them on the inside of the engine compartment to secure the fenders to the grill and if you still wanted to yo could use wing nuts also..
but yea taking off the fenders would open up all kinds of room for extreme front end flex without rubbing.

what kinda suspension you have on your cj? is it still stock SUA or is it SOA?

Stock SUA, and that it will stay. I'm seriously stuffing tires with no lift.

I've thought about this mod too, especially after blowing a frost plug out on a trail ride, I had to completely remove the left fender in order to reinstall it

Hinged would be nice for easy access, never thought about removing them for wheeling, great idea!

Door hinges would be perfect! as stated, the hood will keep them from jumping out on the road.

Re-route all electrical hardware to the firewall, and wiring to the radiator supports, and you're good to go!

And just think of the mud you can spray doing a front digg!!
