I have an old jeep and a big V8 So i just run the Lowest grade gas but I do GUNK carb and gas cleaner every two or three tanks.
Just wondering what you all run? 87 (Cheapskate!), 89, 91-93, race gas?.
I just filled up with some 91 on base and i noticed my low end knock is gone and i am averaging like 20mpg as opposed to my 15-17.9.

The cheaper the better.
I was reading tha manual that came with our commander, and it says DO NOT use anything about 87 octane with the v6 abd 89 octane with the v8. I can't imagine why, though. I always thought the higher octane the better.

Both my XJ and '02 F150 run better/get better milage on the 87 octane.
My XJ ('99) the 'check engine' light comes on if I run 89 or higher!
On my CJ, I get a bit better milage running 91 octane Non-oxygenated fuel, but the cost isn't worth the gain, and not all stations carry the non-oxygenated fuel.

if it doesnt say to run higher octane in your vehicle then you really shouldnt there is no real added benefit and you dont get a complete burn when it ignites causing gunk build up
My BMW 335i ran 93 octane at the lowest. It would tolerate 91 octane, but the engine would retard.

That's what the engine was made for, that's what I run.
If someone out there is getting 3.5-5MPG increases running a step higher in octane with no tuning.... I call shenanigans.
