Can't remember (mine was totaled 5 years ago), do you have to have your foot on the brake to turn the key, if so maybe release the parking brake and try it.
I'm Mike, make sure you spell it right, because I do not want to get the wrong A$$hole in trouble.

If you do not have time to do it right the first time, how do you have time do do it over?

Can you move the gear shift to neutral?

You also mention parking on an incline.
If you park on a incline the parking pawl will lockup.(Meaning the incline and the weight of the vehicle put to much pressure at the parking pawl inside the tranny) You need some one to push up the vehicle a little against the incline to relieve the pressure and then pull the shifter to neutral.Even tough you put the e-park, some time they roll. Easy press the brake pedal to the floor to activate the ignition switch and shifter lever.
    Hope that help.
now to get my huge buddy over here to push on the jeep

You might want to look at the safety cable that goes from the brake pedal to the shifter .(Its a safety for children to not put a vehicle in gear while the engine is running and when you press the brake pedal it release the shifter
    lockup)

Now the only thin that lock the ignition is the steering wheel. Put a little presure in the key while you move the steering.
