rear diff explosion

so my problem is i havent been able to get to a shop myself(live on post so no workin in the driveway) but as i was backing into my driveway a few mins ago...i feel a kind of clunk, get out and look at the rear end..apparently it exploded..theres a good size hole in the diff cover..havent been able to take the diff cover off to see what happened...but i imagine theres no chance that i could end up only having to replace the diff cover? pics to come shortly..

Nope. If there is a hole in the cover, there is some serious damage inside.

I got really lucky, and when the cross shaft (AMC Mod20) snapped in 3 pieces, I was able to clean out the mess, and replace the shaft.

Don't drive it like that! It may cuase more damage.

you say dont drive it..yea i understand that..but i have a front tow bar..would it be bad to even let the rear tires spin to get it to the auto skills shop?

Wow dude... that sucks about as bad as suck can get on a rear diff, I am curious as to what caused it....

Its probably a mess inside there. I would pop the diff off and see what the damage is and find out what binds up. If the wheels spin (jack it up and spin a tire slowly with your hand) without bad things happening you could DC the drive shaft and limp to a shop.... that is a big IF though.

at the very least, I would pull the carrier out of it if you were going to try to drive it to a shop. most insurance companies will tow up to 50 miles are so as part of their emergency road side assistance.
I would definitely pull the cover and take a look inside though.
Do you have a locker? Did you have gears done recently? What size tires are you running?

i kept tossin the rear driveshaft on my 85 ramcharger. so i disco'ed the shaft until i could repair all of the u-joints.
but yeah, there is some "not cool" damage in there.
not sure if it would be less expensive to rebuild it or just replace it.

cant pull the cover as awesome picerne military housing has threatened to evict me if they catch me workin on my jeep again lol and i dont have a locker..just got done having my transfer completely rebuilt..unexpected 1000 dollar repair...just 15 or so days ago. BS part is i had the shop service both diffs...oh and im runnin 33X12.50's

replaced pretty much everything inside the transfer case..fork,sleeve, planatarys(sp) redid all seals..they atleast took off my diff cover to drain them because they have new seals. even if it isnt their fault..youd think theyd notice something was gunna explode in less then 15days.

They had to have F'ed something up.
