    Default Slipping Tranny Help

I have a 97 ZJ and when I am driving about 20 the tranny starts slipping, I can shift to 2nd or 1st manually and it will be ok. I first started by slipping a little when it was cold like the torque conv. was going, now it worse. Does anyone know if I can adjust bands or something to fix this to keep from spending a butt load of money. I am interested in all ideas that will solve this.

    Thanks
    Kevin

Is it a full time case? (249 I think) If so, it may the "Viscous Coupling", or VC, in the T-case.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but have heard of them acting like that.

It slips in either 2 0r 4wd. I found a manual that show how to adjust the front and rear bands. I am going to do the adjusting and chang the filter b/c I got the tranny used and didn't change the filter so now is the time. If the adjustment don't work I will let AAMCO diagnose it and then decide on a used one or not.

Yeah, since you have a 2WD option, it doesn't have a VC.

Check out your AAMCO first! I know they are 'indepently owned', so not all of them are bad. But the one here was, and one I used in TX was.

The one here went out of biz after being sued by multiple people

When they did my 4 runner, they had 2 pan bolts cross threaded, and 4 missing! When I went back, the owner tried to tell me I did it! In order to make him look bad, and I was "In on it" with the people trying to sue him.

I told him BS! If I had even known he was being sued for shoddy work, I would never have taken it there in the first place!

I have since found a great auto tranny guy. AT are the only thing I haven't attempted to rebuild yet

It is quite possibly the torque converter. That is the same symptoms mine had when I pulled it (95 ZJ/46RH). This is the most common problem with the ZJ trannys. Also, while you are playing under there, remove the check ball in the pressure side of your cooler lines. They like to gum up and kill trans.

How can I be sure what tranny I even have.

Ask him his name. If he keeps slipping, smack-a-ho. That's what I do to all my bitches. I don't do trannys though. 0.02 and good luck

the 249 came standard behind the V8, and a very limited option on the I6. when the VC does fail the jeep will crab walk around the corner b/c it will essentially lock the X-fer case like on a M998 hi lock. barking tires around every corner will sound like an episod of CHiPs....
