What kind of Jeep? Older CJ's are direct linkage, if they don't shift, there's something wrong/blocking it.

XJ's, ZJ's and I believe the newer Wranglers, have the lever brackets on the tub/body on one side, and the tranny on the other.

Becuase of this, the pin holding the lever in will pop out of it's bracket, due to body flex or wear.

Look underneath, find the linkage and where the lever mounts. Check the pivot point. The bushing may be worn, or the rod popped out of it's socket.

Have you done a body lift or motor mount lift lately? If yes, this could mess with your linkage. While sitting in your jeep, look down towards your right foot. On the hump that goes over your transmission/transfercase, you'll see 4 bolts with 1" washers on them. This is what holds your t-case shifter linkage to the body.
Go under your jeep and look up in that same area, between your belly skid and the body. Have someone cycle the t-case through 2, 4hi, N & 4lo. You should be able to see what's happening.
