haha. you don't HAVE too, but I hated not having any top end and having to constantly downshift for every moderate hill on the free way.

Looks like you've got a JK? The JK axles are a bit stronger than the TJ axles. ... your axles should be fine unless you're out pounding it on the rocks. I'd avoid trying to jump it and I wouldn't try doing any burnouts either.
As for gears, it all depends on what you've got in there and what transmission you're running. In my auto 05 rubi, I would want to run 4.88s or 5.13s with 35s... that would give me just a bit more oomph than stock gearing with stock tires.
Can you run it w/o gears?... yes. You'll probably want to re-gear soon though. Honestly, I would save up for gears, axle shafts, lockers and get it all done at once to save on installation costs.
Hey, in some cases a picture is worth a thousand words and you will find a color coded chart that explains this better than I can. As you look at the chart you need to decide on one of three things about what you need/want:
Highway driving (Good Fuel Economy), Daily Driver/Weekend Wheeler (Best Overall Performance), or Most Power (reduced fuel economy).
In my particular case I run 4.56's with 35"....I get 10 mpg on the highway or on the trail in 4lo......

Austere Mobility in a '99 TJ Sport with a few bells and whistles
The bravest of all Spartans was Dienekes. It is said that on the eve of battle, he was told by a native of Trachis that “the Persian archers were so numerous that, when they fire their volleys, the mass of arrows will block out the sun.”
Dienekes, however, quite undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a laugh, “Good. Then we’ll fight in the shade!”

Regearing is always a good idea when increasing tire size in order to maintain factory performance and fuel economy.
This might help:

I bought my JK with 373s because I knew that I was going to regear. I have a 4" and 35s. I wanted to add the ARBs front and back at the same time that I regeared so it took a little longer than I had planned to get up the dough so by the time I was ready to regear I was good and sick of the 373s!
I went with 513s and it made one hell of a difference. I think that 513s are perfect for 35s - it seems to be just right.
Hopefully it will be just right for the 37s
cool. good thing i have plenty of time to research this stuff before i get back to the states. lol
I went with the 488's and made a big difference. I also did go with chromo axles.
okay hey.. what about a 3.75 inch lift? would i have to do anything special with that?
