    Default Getting rid of the 3rd brake light? Legal?

    I want to remove my tire rack and get rid of my third brake light... Is this legal in GA?

    I don't think so. It was (for a while, not sure if it still is) a FED law that said if the factory put it on there as a safety feature, it could not be removed unless replaced with a better version.

    EDIT: Your best bet is to call the SO or HP and ask them what the rules are.

    It is still a Fed law that all vehicles made since 1986 be equipped with a third brake light. Weather or not your local cops will enforce it is another story.

    i threw on a new bumper and with the 35in spare tire and after that you couldn't even see it so i took mine off, never had and problems without it

    i never had a problem in ny when i took it off the '94
    *DECEASED* 1976 CJ-7, AMC 304/T150, 33" x 12.50 Dayton Timberline AT's, Stock AMC 20 rear and Dana 30 front both with 2.73's.

    Never had an issue with mine and it has been registered in NC and VA.

    I would probably throw it into a box and hang onto it. You may not have issues for the next few years and then find an inspector that fails you for not having it.

    I don't think most state laws say you need a 3rd brake light.. they usually say you're not allowed to remove any of them if they came that way from the factory.

    Yeah, taking it off... throw it somewhere in the garage and if i get pulled over, ill bat my blue eyes and say"Sorry officer.. I didn't know"... lol
