    Default CJ7 tranny swap?????

I have a 84, 258 CJ-7 with a going bad T-4. I would like to get another T-4. But were I am at it is limited. Do anyone know other transmissions I can put on without much modding?

The best ever factory manual trans used by Jeep IMHO is the T-18a Granny low 4spd. They are near bullet proof. The next best thing would be the T-176 4 spd. If you can find one in a donnor vehicle your better off. I bought a complete Jeep for mine. Find a CJ-7 or CJ-5 donor, Stay away from the FSJ's they used a spacer on the front of the trans to make them longer, it's about $500 worth of parts to shorten them to fit a CJ. Of course a CJ-7 will have everythign you need to just bolt it in. I know a guy in WV that has a T-18 for sale out of his CJ-7. He just swapped to a Chevy 350 and Auto trans.

    Default toss the T4...

Like a terminator sequel...the "4" should not be done. Your oconus...? That makes it a little harder (big surprise!) but still do-able. My first suggestion is go to Novaks website. There is a plethera of information there pertaining to what is what. I would think an AX15 would be able to be found around there somewhere as they were used in Jeeps AND Toyotas. You'll want to do some research to ensure spline counts etc...but it wouldn't surprise me if it is a darn close to bolt in affair!?! Just my thoughts...good luck!

The AX-15 is a decent swap, too. A friend of mine put a Mercades 5 cyl Diesel with a AX-15 to D300 in his cj. The sweet thing is he gets 29 MPG out of it. Might be a idea for you if your in Europe.

    Default tranny swaps...

Not a problem with the information...hope it helps. To add another of my .02cents...I like the T-18. I have one in my '67 Jeepster Commando and even adapted on into my '91 YJ. And while the granny gear for 1st is great for crawling...you may wish to rethink using one for a few reasons.
First, being in Europe, you are not likely to stumble across one laying around.
Second, if this is you daily driver, you will basically then have a 3 speed. 1st gear is really not useful on the street anymore. Adn with gas costing what it does there..I would think a 5speed would be a better choice?
Third, Transplanting an AX15 would likely cost less...maybe.?.
If I were doing it there and had to order stuff from states side...I guess it would depend on my budget? If you want the crawl-ability of granny, and the overdrive...there are two ways to go about that. An NV4500 is the Bees knees where that is concerned. I am trying to aquire a scrambler and have it partially built before I PCS to Germany (Graff) early next year. My intent is an NV4500/dana 300 but I warn you...this is NOT cheap! The other solution that may be a bit more fiscally responsible is do the AX15 and buy a "range box" or "underdrive" (like Klune, or the "Black box") to get your crawl on...
Just some food for thoughts...feel free to send me an email if you need more ideas or wnat to chat...
    Cheers! Ted

only problem with the ax15 is it is not nearly as strong as the t-18 or nv depends what your putting it behind... and you could always put in a granny low and get an overdrive it works both ways..

The T4/T5 are easy to rebuild, but as stated, aren't the best for longevity.

If you do rebuild/stay with the T4 (Or go with a T5) make sure you use SYNCHROMESH tranny fluid! I know Pennzoil makes it, and I believe others do.

Originally, they used ATF, but with the new additives in ATF, it eats the brass components/synchros.

80W-90 or 75W-90 does not lubricate the smaller bearings adequately, and you will burn up the tranny.

If getting a used T4/T5, see what kind of fluid is being run in it, before dropping cash on it.

The T-176 will be your best bet, for a bolt in tranny.

Stay away from the SR-4 tranny! While it's similar to the T4, the stick/top portion is different, and very prone to breaking.
