    Default What direction to go?

we have a 95YJ , 2.5L , 4"lift. my wife wants to up grade to a bigger motor and have an auto tranny,... shes so hot when she talks like that...LOL This rig is a DD and mild trail rig for fishing, camping. What would be a good way to go for an up-grade. 50mph is not enough...LOL

Easiest way to go is find a donor vehicle with the 4.0L and auto tranny already. You'll be able to rip everything you need out of it.... engine, trans, t-case, drive shafts, motor mounts, computer.

Might be just as easy to purchase one with the 4.0 and auto tranny already in it, swap your lift with it's suspension, then sell your old jeep.

I agree. Buy another YJ, and use the best stuff of both to build one nice rig, then sell the other to recoup some cash.

When I wanted wide trac axles, and needed a tranny for my CJ, I bought a rusted out '84 pretty cheap. Drove it around for a couple months, making sure the mechanical stuff was OK, then swapped the drivetrain into my '80.

Then I parted out the stuff I didn't need. (wasn't enough left to make a whole Jeep to sell)

If you find a donor 4.0, you'll need the computer and harness.

If you go with a 258 (also called the 4.2, found in CJ's and YJ's) it'll be carberated, so you don't need that stuff.

But if you're going to go through the hassle of a swap, might as well get the EFI with the HO 4.0!

Buy a wrecked 98 Grand Cherokee Limited and swap in the 5.9 V8 and the auto transmission.

everything would have to be switched out , the issue I have is the differant lenght in tranny's , If the rear drive shaft needs to be cut short...then what is the shortest you can go?` Is there any write-ups on here that anyone has done.

You'll have to measure the difference between the yokes after you get everything else put in. Then either have a driveshaft cut down or made.

I wish my wife would talk like that. Any time I bring up working on the Jeep all I get is an eye roll and some mumbling. I'm jealous. You are a lucky man.

Picking up another YJ with the motor/trans combo you want would probably be the easiest way to go.

    Default me too...

I have to agree...I would recomend finding a good, used XJ. They are like frogs in a swamp, dirt cheap, and easy to find unabused and wasting away following their fall from their popularity as the soccer milf vehicle to be seen in. Last one I got was a '91 Briarwood...FREE! Replaced the dumb ABS with a regular booster and my ex is still driving it...
Plus, you can always sell off the stuff you don't want or use. Though I doubt its worth the hassle to reinstall it into the XJ. But while its (the drivetrain) out you can address all the normal issues. Rear main seal replacement, replace the cracked header, and check for any other leaks...Just my idea...hope it helps!

do the XJs have the in-line 6? if so do they have a leaky valve cover? should we stay with the EFI or go carb? I guess the drive shafts would be my minor issue, seems like a huge project up ahead.. and swaping out the wire harness is a monster in its self. yeah we are an out door familey.. we have toasted the trans in a 2000 2500RAM....water up in the throtle body....mud in the tranny..spun a main bearing.... all in fun....but it was covered by insurance...my wifes a good talker.
