I took the rear off when I did my lift 4 years ago, and my front is in a constant state of disconnect (zip tied out of the way). I do have the disconnects onboard though, just in case I feel I need them (never has happened)
So I was reading in the latest JP. They have an article on the 10 most troublesome parts on our Jeeps.
one of the things listed was the track bars on the YJ.. They suggested just removing them.
if I'm correct the track bar on coil sprung suspensions goes with the 4 link and stops the axle from traveling side to side. right?
if that assumption is correct why is it needed on a leaf sprung suspension? the axle is bolted to the springs which are in return bolted to the frame at two places. I'm aware that there will be some side to side movement but is the trackbars really needed?
has anyone removed theirs? how did it effect performance both on the street and on the trail?

well for one i think devildogsoldier is thinking of a sway bar not a track bar. they are completely differant. i have a 90 YJ and i took the track bars off when i did an axle swap. im running 33's and i cant tell any differance from before when i had them on. some people say you get more flex but i cant tell. maybe if you did a spring over and had a tall lift would you want them but that would be the only reason. i also had a 67 CJ5 and it didnt have them either
thanks
I'm running 33's with about 3" of lift. I figured it wasn't needed.. the article pretty much explained to me what I already figured.

What they said, get rid of the track bars. As for the sway bar, if you do alot of highway, get disconnects. I haven't run my sway bar in a long time, but I'm not on the highway much. I just had to adjust my driving style a little bit.
Dump the track and sway bars....PERIOD
well it is a daily driver so I'm going with disco's I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track with the track bars.. thanks guys!

There is no reason for a leaf sprung suspension to need a trac bar. Pitch them! I have removed several; stock, sua lifted and soa lifted, and there are no ill effects. I wouldn't take the sway bar off. I ran my YJ on the road with out the sway bar and it was scary. It had a SOA with stock YJ leafs, They are so soft the sway bar is a must for highway speeds.
