    Default Coolant questions

So, I got the 'new to me' 258 into the CJ. I ran straight water in the cooling system, both to flush it, and make sure it was a good motor, before dumping in the Anti-freeze.

But......I bought the stupid 'orange' colored DEX coolant for the newer GM vehicles.

And had the CJ cooled and drained before I realised that I got the wrong stuff

Anyone know what the difference is?

Will it affect my cooling system? ('80 CJ7 w/stock rad)

It's not mixed with the 'Green' stuff, as the cooling system was empty. I mixed it 60/40 with water.

It says it good for the new rigs, with aluminum radiators. I'm just hoping it doesn't eat brass radiators

Other than that, I can't see it making a big difference, but I don't know diddly about this new stuff they have out now.

Did some 'Googly' searchin', and now I'm really confuzed

Got some weird answers (mostly from 'Wiki', or people talking out thier **** from what I've seen on auto related Q's in the past)

This seemed to be the most informative:

    http://www.aces.edu/dept/extcomm/newspaper/coolant.html

Other's I found said my engine will blow up, or the head gasket will melt away, or the coolant will turn to a gel (and maybe attack small towns??)

Anyway, still would appreciate any real world Jeeper experience with the stuff.

At $15 a gallon, I hate to flush out the orange stuff if I don't have to!

    Dang

Now I find this from Popular Mechanics:

Now let's look at "retrofit" and "drain and fill" and explain what you can and can't do safely, and a bit of why. If a vehicle has a copper-and-brass radiator, forget a retrofit, says General Motors, because the organic acid (orange) antifreeze may not provide adequate protection for the lead solder in that radiator.
    Guess I'm draining and flushing

Spending another $30 is cheaper than replacing an old rad, that's still in good shape!

Make sure you flush the hell out of it. The two types of coolant CANNOT be mixed. If they do get mixed it becomes caustic and will eat up seals, hoses and will damage brass/copper. The major differences, IIRC, is the old green stuff will protect brass/copper better and the new dexcool is better for aluminum.

That seems to be the consensus, at least among the mechanics I've talked to. (found some really weird answers on the (non Jeep forum) web)

Yeah, I flushed the hell out of it!! I first drained the orange stuff, and saved the 4 gallons of 50/50. (my CJ takes 3 gallons, so 2 gallons split 50/50=4 gal)

Then I filled/ran/drained twice, and filled/ran/flushed twice, netting me 14 gallons of orange water

By then, it was running out clear, so I pulled the petcock out, and let it run with the hose stuck in it. Probably ran another 15 gallons of water through it.

Filled it with the GREEN stuff, mixed 50/50.

The wifes car takes the ORANGE Dex cool I believe. I'll change it out this summer with the stuff I pulled from the CJ.

What a pain! Soon as I realized I had the wrong stuff, I should have waited for the wife to get home, stole her car, and exchanged it for the green stuff!

I should be good there. I ran about 16 gallons of water through the CJ's radiator/heater core and cracked block, driving the 40 miles to get to the U-haul in Brush, CO (more than 1/2 of the water was from a couple of streams along the way)

And after installing the 'new' motor, ran only water until I knew it was a good motor. (no sense in dumping anti-freeze in until I knew the engine was goona work or not)

And after my 'blunder' of dumping the orange tuff in, I flushed it out really, really good!

I don't like the idea of clumps of goo traveling through the cooling system

    There's more info out there!!

Lets see, just off the top of my brain pool......

    There are different color coolants:

    GREEN
    ORANGE
RED (toyota same as the green, but they dye it red, I think)
    BLUE (some German cars)

Then there's a newer Orang-ish one, that can be mixed with the other Orange and Green (but not the stuff I accidently bought)

And the good old Green stuff is hard to find! (which is why I grabbed the wrong stuff)

Advance Auto only carries 'PEAK' brand in the old stanby GREEN coolant, but they have a whole bunch of brands for the orange, including thier own (which is what I grabbed, Assuming it would be the good ol' green stuff)

It is confusing, that's for sure!
