Aussie Locker in d35

My TJ has the stock D35 and D30 axles. Eventually I will be replacing the axles but I dont think I will be able to afford it until I graduate in a year and a half. I have been reading a lot of forums on another site that says the D35 just cant handle a locker. Is this true? I am looking at a lunchbox locker like the Aussie or Lockrite. I want it to be capable until I have more money to throw at my rig. So I plan on throwing a lunchbox on one of the axles. Which axle would be best? Can my axles handle the locker? I have 33's on the TJ with a 2.5 suspension lift and 1 in body. Thanks for any advice.

For the most part your D35 isn't sturdy enough for a locker. It has to be the weakest rear axle in the modern Jeep line. Your D30 front can handle a locker better, but since you don't have lock-out hubs I wouldn't suggest a front locker for handling/steering purposes.
Like many have suggested in a different thread (New/Old Locker...cool), save your money, and head to a pull-a-part, and find a Ford 8.8 (with disc brakes & the same gear ratio as your front axle) and use that as your starting point for an axle built.
A local Pull-a-part (by me) sells axles for like $75 to $180 dollars, even 1 ton's. So shop around, and make those pennies count for something.

I know someone that locked a dana 35 with 3.73 gearing, and hasn't broken anything.

I run Assuies in both mine dana 30 front and 44 rear. The trade off is that it makes tight turns on the trail a little rough but they are awsome for the price. you can tackle the install yourself

If you don't have the money to replace the axle when it breaks, then don't do it.
I would throw an aussie up front in the D30 before I thought about putting one in the D35.

If you want to lock the rear, I'd think about a D44 0r an 8.8. D35 is a time bomb!

I have been convinced so looking for a lunchbox for my front. Anybody know of any good deals? Northridge is out of the D30 version. I have seen the Lockrite as low as 279 shipped.

Keep your eyes open and be patient. They can be found used for 75-100 on craigs list. Watch greatlakes4x4,pirate and jeep forum. If worried you can always get new springs and pins

I ran my TJ for 3 years with a d35 rear and an Aussie locker with no problems. You have to remember that you have a d35, and you need to be easy on the skinny pedal. When I moved up to 35's, I switched over to an 8.8 with another Aussie. I still run mine with 3:73 gears.
