If your feet are hot it's too hot. I had a car that overheated a lot and my feet would sweat since the engine is right there. I had to turn on the heater to pull heat off the engine.
Only gauges that work all the time in the CJ are Volt and Speedo. Are there tell tale signs of overheating? When the temp gauge dies, it falls down which makes it look like its overheating. She runs fine, no change in anything that I can feel.
CJ has:
4.2L, stock carb

if you have low oil pressure that can be a sign of over heating too. typically smoke from under the hood would indicate over heating, the engine seizing up violently would be a sign of over heating, when it shuts down on its own thats a possible sign of over heating as well...
Get a machanical temp guage.
I'll grab some pics on how to install on the 4.2. (stock sender hole is to small)
It's better to know where it's running, becuase once they get hot, they go fast, cuasing serious engine damage.

Big plume of smoke with no flames coming from under the hood that smells like antifreeze is a pretty good indicator!![]()

See, I think the radiator just needs to be changed out. Will likely change the thermo while I'm in there.
Will the thermostat stick and unstick even during hours of driving? When my TJ's thermo stuck, it stayed like that and never released. This one will overheat and stay until I turn the engine off for a minute and then it will cool down. I did the heater trick and that helped every now and again.
What other components are involved? Water pump?
Also, belts are fine, coolant is fine.
It's rare that the T-stat will stick/unstick, but it does happen.
Sounds more like a plugged radiator.
If the water pump is original/old, night as well replace it while your in there.
