    Default Need Gear/Axle HELP ASAP

Not sure what happened, but I was in 4 low and trucking through(not fast) and I hear a loud bang and grind from the front.

Starts getting really shaky at highway speeds so I assume its front driveshaft. After inspection I see that the U joint is effed, so I pull the drive shaft and take it to the dealer cause they told me theyd pop the old one out and put the new one in for 40 bucks.

So im driving and im getting a loud banging from the front at low speeds, but highway speeds its quieter, but still somethings going on up there. When I reverse(6 spd) it binds and get a loud bang, but will back up. Im trying to get back and the banging from the front end is getting more violent and louder; only at low speeds. It almost feels like its binding and slamming through whatever is wrong. Again, at higher speeds it gets through it but as soon as I slow down, its banging hard.

Im at home now and its up on the jack, and the axle shaft U joint seems to be in place without breakage. I dont know what to do now.

The dealer already wants 500 for a new drive shaft cause they cant replace the U joint in that because its aluminum. I can only imagine what it would cost me to do whatevers wrong now. of course, this happens 500 miles after the warranty expires.

ANY ideas? I have no vehicle to work now, and am bumming rides.

On the driveshaft issue, check with Woody's driveshafts.....MUCH better than stock and costs the same or less than a freakin OEM!! (I found this out a week AFTER I replaced my front DS with OEM)

Can't replace the U-joint? Sounds fishy to me!

Did it/does it still make noise with the front drive shaft removed?

If so, and both axle joints are OK, it's in the ring and pinion or bearings.

You can pull the cover, drain the gear oil, and visually inspect the R&P.

If the unit bearing(s) (wheel bearing) are bad, you should be able to tell with the tires off the ground. With the rig securely on jack stands, grab the top and bottom of the tire, and try and move it. It shouldn't move.

Sounds like the R&P to me though, I'd check that first.

One of my friends had a similar problem recently, so we took the front diff cover off and discovered that he had completely grenaded the spider gears in his D30.

    X2

Pull the different cover and I'll bet you find the culprit.

Another possibility is you sheared a pin in the transfer case?

"Not sure what happened, but I was in 4 low and trucking through(not fast) and I hear a loud bang and grind from the front."

If you can make forward progress and are using 4th gear or higher in low range you need to be in hi range and 1st or 2nd gear. I did the same thing to my transfer case and the sounds you are describing are exactly what I experienced, other than I could tell it was coming from underneath me, transfer case and not the front end. They don't tell you this in the owners manual or anywhere else, but the Jeep OEM transfer cases are not meant to be run in low range for extended periods of time at speed...at speed is above 15mph.

So first I would pull the front differential cover and see what is up. If you can not find any thing wrong, disconnect the front drive shaft and if the issue is still there it is the transfer case.

I forgot about the newer T-cases. I have the D300 in my CJ, and they are dang near bullet proof

SGM O is right, making noise and bucking, even with the driveshaft removed, could be front end or the T-case, not just the front end as I suggested earlier.

It's easiest to check the front diff first. I know a lot of TJ owners had problems with the R&P grenading, or the pinion bearings going out, of the D30. (Just assuming you have a TJ, since you have a 6 speed)

When he got his doors stolen around March of last year, he had a yellow JK.

Can't see the picture on the other thread, but if it is a four door JK and not a Rubicon, still has the Dana 30 up front and an NP231 transfer case, so all could be an issue...but if it is a JK, what year and how many miles? Could this be covered under warranty? I would definately argue the issue if the Jeep is still stock.
