What kind of rack did you buy?
Just some info if you're thinking about buying one. I had a really sturdy (and expensive) tubular rack installed. I wanted to use it for hauling my dog kennel around. There is room for my Shepard or the kennel so the plan was to throw the kennel up on the rack. I hated it from the minute I drove away from Trick Trucks. My Rubicon is a soft top and that rack sounded like my husband's snoring. Terrible. On top of that, my mileage dropped almost 2 miles a gallon. The thing would probably be okay on a hard top but then don't try to park in a garage ... I almost took out the water pipes in the garage at Walter Reed!
This may sound silly to some but I have a friend who built a good sturdy rack out of a futon and it looks good too......and a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a prebuilt rack!
I have the Garvin rack. I love it. looks good with the jeep and folds back to allow the soft top to come down. I dont notice it at all. I use it mostly to haul around my kayak. No complaints!
Any RR will cause additional wind resistance and thus MPG drops...nature of the beast. We already have the aerodynamic = of a brick w/tires. The noise you heard...? Hmm..No idea.
JeepGod...the re-use of a Futon is actually a great idea...I may look around the thrift stores for one. The basket is the most time consuming part of a build and if I can find one that I can modify that may be a winner! Thanks!
