Happened on my yj I just drilled them out and re threaded it.
Ok,
Today, I was working on the ol' TJ and found out that the upper rear shock bolts are not easy to get too and for two they break really easy. Now! How long do you think a weld will hold? I am down to my hands and knees pleeding with this Jeep now wondering how many more things will break when I try to do basic upkeep!
Last week, I was replacing a U-joint on the front axle and broke a bolt on the hub assembly, witch in turn ended up costing me $300.00 here in europe due to the bearing bolt not wanting to come out, even after being drilled. Now, these damn bolts being rusted thanks to the German road salt.
So, Can I weld these shocks on, and how bad will that be?

I began to re-drill them and it took about 2 hours for one bolt! The auto craft shop here has nothing but crappy tools. old, warn out and crappy. I will have to go back at it on Tuesday. That is when they open again. Thanks 05jeeper

I just replaced them with bar pin eliminators!!!
Those 'bar pin' style shock mounts suck!!
You'll be fine welding something in. I've done a few XJ's and TJ's with no problems.
A lot of guys remove the rear sway bar, and use the small mounts from them as bar pin eleminators, welding them right to the tub/body.
I never had any luck drilling and re-tapping them, they always stripped out. Welding nuts in didn't work either.
My buddy Jeeperwilly bought a set of bolt in bar pin eleiminators, and had Moab 4x4 Outpost weld them in(didn't have much choice, since we didn't have a welder with us!)
