    Default CB????

OK, so I want to put a CB in my Jeep for use during trail rides. I know crap about'em.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to which one to get, which Antenna, etc? I'd like to keep the total around $200 or so, if possible.

    Thanks,
    John

I run a Uniden 510 and a Firestik 4'. If you're only using this for trail coms, then go cheap. If you wanting this for longer distances or constant use, then spend more money (Cobra with built in SWR meter). I think I spent less than $150 for the radio, radio mount, antenna, antenna mount, and antenna cable.

Yeah, pretty much just for trail comms. I'm trying to simplify this whole thing, found a couple sets already put together for Jeeps from the typical Jeep-stuff stores.

    Any input on these?

GOVT1911 that is the exact set up I have, but I bought mine at a truckstop and wnat to say it cost me around $100.00 total. Works well on the trail, but not so good on the hwy. Recommend you go out tot he truckstop just south of Fayetteville on I-95 and check prices...also the PX may be able to get you the same unit tax free.

Your best bet is a Cobra 25 and a Firestick II- FS4(Withstand 900 watts) with tunable tip( This antenna is a top loaders,
all you need is 1 third sticking up your top)
    Cobra Radio about $100.00
Antenna $29.00.(Make sure you tune the antenna)
Get a good 18' of coax "Belden" cable(Not less than 18')
You will be talking about 15 plus miles out of the box.
And if you want crisp clear modulation add a n Astatic mike
or Road King Mike they run around $40.00.

    NOTE.
What makes a cb radio perform is the coax and antenna.
I have tested that particular antenna "Firestick II"
and perform excellent. I talked from White Sand ,NM to Tulsa, OK
and S Cal.(My Cobra 25 is super tuned)

I only use mine on the trail. I picked up a Cobra HHRoadtrip hand Held. I can run it off the cigarette lighter or batteries if I want. it comes with two antennas, one on the unit and another with an extension on it. I installed a Firestik Antenna and mounted the the Firestik with a quick disconnect on my tire carrier. I hook it up to the cigarette lighter and antenna when I go on the trail. It works out okay for me although it is a pain when you have the wires around. I could use it on the trail with just the antenna that came with it, but didn't know that at the time. The big benifit to the hand held is it is totally portable with batteries, but I never had a need to use it that way. I do get a lot of extra range and clarity with the externally mounted antenna and I can use it on the road when connected that way.

If I was going to do it again, I would get the Cobra 75 WXST all in the handset CB and reuse my antenna setup. Doesn't take up much space and people I know that have them say they are good. you can just remove the handset and antenna when not in use.You can get that radio for less than $90 at amazon. You will still need to get the antenna mounted and cabled.

As far as the PX goes around here, you don't find many bargains. Most things are cheaper outside even if there is a sales tax on them.
