i say 8, make it easy on yourself and have hotwire auto modify a harness from a grand cherokee and drop a 5.2 in that booger.
My under-powered 4 cylinder just isn't going to cut it for too much longer and I'm thinking it's time for a 6 or 8. Thought I'd ask around and get some opinions on what to start looking for. Right now I'm leaning to the straight six, but I'm not opposed to alternate suggestions.
Thanks!

If I offend anyone tonight, I apologize. That's not my intention. I'm not going to guess what your personal line of decency is. I cross my own from time to time. It's how I know I still have one. not that i actually cared in the first place.

I would second the cowboy! You could do the (fairly) standard SBC swap, but the 5.2 in mine is a tourqey little bastard, gets great mileage, and is fun as hell. Hit a j/y and pull one, slap that pig in!

hell yeah. drop that 8 like the boys above mentioned
If you're gonna do it, do it once and get the power you need on the first try. I wish I would have swapped out my drivetrain for a 350 vice my 304. My .02 cents.

When I do this, I'll have to switch the transmission and transfer case and new drive shafts also? Or will I be able to keep my transfer case and current driveshafts a the lengths they're at now? Do I need to find everything as a complete drive line to swap out? I'm planning on keeping my dana 30 in the front for now (mostly because I just dropped $600 into it in the form of chromoly shafts and a locker), should I get ride of the 35 in back at the same time?

With all the fab involved and all the work, do your self a favor and go V8. I6 might look like a simple swap but is not, and there is the price. When you compare the price a I6 with tranny V 5.2 and tranny there is not much difference. Then there is the power issue, you go I6 and soon after you will realize that you coud have gone V8 and got tons of more power....
Dunno just my .02
You will need
Engine with wirng accesories and computer
Tranny
Imput shaft on trans case
If you can get the whole drop out is sometimes cheaper than trying to piece out stuff toguether....
engine frame mounts(the 4banger are not strong enough for I6 or V8)
your d30 with cromo should hold to V8, depending on tire size...
it loks like you have a YJ, check out jackhammer's build thread.

and if you do decide to do this then i can give you a few pointers about grands.

I'm running 33x12.5 and don't plan to go much larger anytime soon.
Wow, that's quite a bit of information... Looks like I've got quite a bit of work ahead of me.
Thanks!
