I just bought one, and i thought it was a great investment, mine is a little tempermental with its carb, but you would have a great platform to start from Dana 44's front and rear, and mods are usually fairly priced

I have too much experience with FSJs (Full size jeeps) LOL! Just from squinting at the pic on the CL ad I would say it has the 229 Tcase and the vaccum disconnect front axle. These can be problematic sometimes. Check for rust. Machanicals can all be fixed pretty easy and these are in most every junkyard so parts are cheap. Body work and rust removal is a big pain. See if the rear window functions..I will be surprised if it does. They are a never ending source of headaches but good for "negotiating" heehee.
Last word of caution is emmisions. If your in Cali you may have a big hassle to get it to pass. Check to make sure all systems are in place and if it was smogged lately? Kalifornia is a stick up the @ss for most jeepers, and the FSJs get extra loving with the V8s! Ugh. PM or email me if you need specific answers! Now go buy it!

Cool. For a DD they are a little hard to afford as they don't knock down very good MPGs but they ride like a Caddy! They are also pretty stout out of the box and can be built easy, well, and reletivly cheap. Good luck!

I have a 78 Jeep J10 as a daily driver 258, 4 speed, Dana 20. It's great! Also, just pick up a 77 J20-360, 4 speed, Dana 20- for another DD while I do a resto on my 78. If the 77 does all that the 78 will, it was well worth it. My husband has a 79 Cherokee, 360, auto, quadratrac, that we haul our dogs in. So, yea, great choice.

86 is a change over year. it may or may not have vac diconnect front D44. pretty obvious to tell. 229 is a good t-case as long as you shift correctly and keep an eye on it. I've been trying to kill mine so I can up-grade it and I haven't been very successfull.

Most problems arise from vacuum lines. If you want any info on how to gut it all or reduce the amount, let me know. I bought and built mine in Cali and registered it in WA to get away with smog.

The D44's are stout and will take up to 36's with hard abuse. the weak points are the 1310 U-joints.

you can score some chevy/GM wheels 6 on 5.5, throw some meats on and go SOA with chevy outers and hi-steer and it'll be trail ready.

I buy parts from Bj's offroad, TeamGrandwagoneer.com, and junk yards, bought a parts rig... regular stuff from the parts stores but every thing is special order and make sure to tell them it's not a Effin' MOPAR!

Have fun welcome to the addiction of FSJ's

ps.. 522Fireball happens to have her own personal FSJ gold mine so hit her up if you can't seem to find something.

Tons of support out there! And if you haven't found it already register over at International Full Size Jeep Assoc. (IFSJA). There are some really nice folks there and smart too! LOL! And Cutter is correct and nailed a bunch of stuff. What are you plans/goals/wheeling environments? I can offer some suggestions if I know where and how you want to wheel it.
