not a AE but post a pic or two of it and we'll try and help you identify it.
I've got a couple questions about a compass that may or may not have at one point been on an airplane, and may or may not have found it's way into my possession.![]()

What do you need to know?

AE here... I'm a bit rusty (crap, it's been over TEN YEARS now), but I might be able to help....
I was just wondering if it would work just sitting on my dash or if it had to be hooked up to anything. It has a plug on the back, but upon further investigation that appears to be for a light.
If you want to send me the pics in a PM I can ask the dweebs here on base. (that's what we call all the guidance and comm folks lol)

...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

Sorry about the fuzzy pics, the camera isn't what it used to be. I think it's about time to upgrade that too.
I know what is, so that's no problem. I'm just not sure if it reads off the mumbo jumbo in the horizontal stab like the digital ones, or if it's independent.
Well $h1t Sarge.......just get out your handy dandy Silva compass figure out which way you are looking then set your "lost and found" item down. If they both say that Not is North then I would have to say it works indipendent. Now I am just an Infantryman and only try to shot down, ride in or jump out of these fancy AC so if I oversimplified the issue then that is my excuse and I am sticking to it!
Cheers!

The bravest of all Spartans was Dienekes. It is said that on the eve of battle, he was told by a native of Trachis that “the Persian archers were so numerous that, when they fire their volleys, the mass of arrows will block out the sun.”
Dienekes, however, quite undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a laugh, “Good. Then we’ll fight in the shade!”

Again it's the simple answer I've over looked... Actually I tested it a couple times in the shop, but there was too much stuff around to throw the reading. I just got lazy and wanted someone to tell me rather than do the footwork myself. It's the weekend I'm allowed to be lazy.
What your showing is a standby whiskey compass. It should have some fluid in it for damping. The plug in back is for the light.
Just about all aircraft still have them, including the newest ones. If everything else fails, you will still have a compass. It will be completely independent.
