    Default Thinking about a CJ-8

Thinking about getting rid of the Rubi and purchasing a CJ-8.
Don't know much about them, definitely don't know much about pricing. It just had a complete frame off resto, all rust and rot cut out and replaced, frame cleaned up, painted, and coated. Original steel tub. It's got the original 4cyl which I'm not a big fan of, but thinking about doing an entire driveline swap within a year of purchase anyways.
So, here's what I'm looking at:
-1981 CJ-8 American Motor Corp. Jeep Scrambler
    -90,400+ original miles
    -4 cylinder
    -4 speed manual
-Clean of accidents etc according to CarFax
-Includes full metal doors, soft doors, half-cab hard top and bikini top
    -Includes full-sized spare tire
-Includes rear bench (original black upholstery)

    NEW PARTS:
    -Black Bestop Seat Covers
-Black vinyl original style traditional bikini top
    -Bikini top header channel bar
    -Original Style Rear Bumpers
    -AM/FM antenna
    -Windshield frame
-Hood accessories (chrome hood latches, footman loops, headlamp
    bezels, chrome tow hooks)
-OEM original stock/never used MOPAR wooden side boards
-Rubber gaskets for full metal doors
-Five new production Cragar Nomad wheels

    MODIFICATIONS/RESTORATION WORK:
-Bulkhead (seperating cab from bed) modified for easier removal
    -Undercoating
-Hard top cap drilled for 3-point seat harness installation
-Roll bar drilled and threaded for 3-point seat harness installation
    -Professionally refinished (rust removal/rhino lining/painting)
    -Refinished Black Vinyl soft doors

    and photos

So, what do you think and what do you think it's worth?

Aren't all CJ's an open channel frame? That's the only concern I have ever had about CJ-8's. Oh yeah, and the price most people want for a nice one.

There are companies that make tube frames for them, direct bolt-ons.

Aside from that Scramblers are my favorite Jeep. Kinda why I always wanted an 04-06 Unlimted, it reminded me of a Scrambler.

The 76-86 CJ frames are boxed, and only open channel at the very front. The problem is they have holes in the frame that let water and mud get inside (if they've been off-road much), and are notorious for rusting out from just above the rear spring mount (front one), to the back. That's the area of the frame that's usually in bad shape, or has been repaired. Looks like a nice Jeep.

boxed....ish, shoddy welds and weak metal. Its just two c channels welded together. Just keep it to a tame motor and less than 35's and you will be fine on the stock frame. Any bigger and cracks start in around the springs mounts and the steering box. This being the primary reason I just sucked it up and bought a AFW frame.

That is a good lookin 8 though, I am guessing 10-11k is the asking price??

The rubi's being sold and I'm picking up a truck.
This is the next step after that.

He hasn't mentioned price yet. When I told him I was looking, I said I wouldn't pay more than $10k if I was going to be replacing the eng/trans.

Haha. Alright. I love my CJ, but man I can't imagine it being a DD. Although, I have been juggling the idea of making it a DD. The problem I find with having a truck AND the CJ is that since I'm not in it all the time, my attention is not on it so I'm not as motivated to spend the money or do the work.

At any rate, she looks great dude.

In order to be DD'able it would need working ac/heat. It would need to be linked instead of on leaf springs. And it would need a new/reliable engine and trans.
I want a weekend toy that I can comfortably take a person and dog offroading for a weekend in, yet have fun driving around town in too.
And I've wanted a CJ for as long as I can remember... if I don't do it now, it may never happen. Need to do it before adult type responsibilities take over
