    Scenario 1.

My current dana 30 has chromo in and out w 760 ujoint on drivers side and a lockrite. 1ton steering and tie rod flip.
    -
    Continue to build the 30.
    -
    Chromo other side $350
    -
Truss the crap out of it $50
    -
Lock out hub conversion to try and keep weak link on the outside $850

    -
    Pros
    keep my bolt pattern
    keep my steering
Hub conversion will eliminate the unibearing to a rebuildable/servicable type bearing , keep week link(hub) on the outside, as well as ability to flip hubs and full float home.
    Keeps dana 30 clearance.
    -
    Cons
    -
    Polishing a turd
even trussed axle tubes relativley weak
might be hard on pinion bearing then stuck investing even more into the 30
    -
    Cost $1250

what D30 is it out of? LP/HP?

if its a HP run some TJ shafts with quality ujoints, cryo the gears, small truss and rock it up to 37's

after doing an all out build on a D30, ill post up a link in a few, i would honestly keep the 30 if you dont plan on running more than 37's and have a moderate right foot.

*edit* heres a link for prolly the most expensive D30 to date... i ran it for a few years in lieu of a 60 i swapped out to run this axle... yes i down graded, still have the 60 though.

My rig is a 95yj with 5.2L v8,46rh,231 mega short v8 internals. Rear is 8.8 with disc and lsd. Current gearing is 3.73 and pulls pretty good and awesome on hiway since I am running 35x12.5 GY MTR with kevlars. Current front is stock yj hp30 with chromo in and out driver side, lock right and tj shaft pass axle. I already have 1ton steering with tie rod flip and just dropped 400 on marsh factory beadlocks.

I just picked up the mtrs and plan on staying on 35s for a while. Its a dual purpose rig that sees chicago city driving and 6-8 wheeling trips a year

    Scenario 2

I FB Currie and got a quote on a custom axle.

For $3100 they would make me a "309" LOL

    Pros

It would be driver drop 9 inch housing with dana 30 c's on it
It would have high pinion 3rd member with 3.73(to match) gears and an ARB
I would be able to keep my current 1ton steering set up
I would be able to keep the current bolt pattern of my marsh beadlocks
It would come with chromo 31 spline inner axles that use 760 size ujoints
9inch has better clearance than a 60 not sure compared to a 44
Would save some in not reconfiguring the rear bolt pattern ,new beads and steering

    Cons

The uni bearing would become the week point
Add the hub conversion to keep the week link on outside of axle and easy fix and still be able to float home if no fix.
Price adding hub conversion would push it to $3900

put 2" spacers on the rear that convert to 5 x 5 1/2, run a HP D44 front from a Bronco or F150 with the 5 x 51/2 bolt pattern. Sell your bead lokcs buy new ones still less than the 9"

Sell the 8.8, D30, and beadlocks and go to a rear 9"/HP44 8 lug pattern and mount some 36's-37's

Skip all the above and build a pair of 60's and rund 37's-39's.

Your possabilities are nearly endless haveing a YJ. You can go thru several axle choices and come out ahead of building that 309 option and be WAY ahead of ever keeping a D30.

When it comes to the D30 you can polish a turd all day long, make it shine like new, but its still a turd. Why throw thousands of dollars at a D30 when in the end you still have a D30?
I have personally witnessed a D35 go thru things it shoudl have never survived thru, in fact I have seen a D35 go thru things that broke a D60 on equal size tires. I have personally witnessed D30's survive an apocalyps and come out alive when D44's broke and even a Hi 9 front axle broke. No axle is indestructable and no axle is guarunteed to break but again why run an axle that has a reputation of giving out more than others.

I have personally destroyed 5 Ring gears, 2 pinions, countless UJoints, and a few sets of shafts in D30's. I have to date only broke one rear axle gear set, and it is still rolling just missing 3-4 teeth
