That's your cam position sensor. It used to be where the distributor was on '99 and older 4.0Ls. Now it's just a sensor and a drive for the oil pump. What problem are you having? No oil pressure? Bad miss?

There was a problem with the gears wearing out and failing on the position sensors. You may want to have it pulled and check the gear on it for wear.

my wifes 04 has the same issue. I was going to look at the Cam PS, but I decided to go the easy route. Pull your valve cover and check the rockers. Hers were a little loose. Give them a little torque and you will definately hear a difference. Another thing I have been doing for my 4.0 buddies is running an engine flush and then a little Marvel through the oil before I change it. Seems to quiet the "4.0 knock" that a lot of folks have.

I agree with doc. Pull the valve cover to verify that your lifters are getting oil as a preventive maintanance measure. But, a lot of the 4.0's have that "clicking". I also heard that is was the distributor/cam postition sensor wearing. Both my 95 did it, but I never got my 06 to do it.

I believe there was a Tech service bulletin about the knock being the CPS. Haven't been able to locate the bulletin yet but when I questioned one on the service managers about it all they would say is let us have it for a few days to see if that's it or not. Didn't want to end up with a huge dealer bill from their "troubleshooting" and I couldn't be without my wheels at the time. Mine is also an '06, post up if anyone actually finds the TSB on this.
