any nutter bypass experts on here?
So I just finished doing the nutter bypass and replaced the electronic Carter BBD with a known good non-electronic Carter BBD. Starts and runs fine until under load, set timing at 8* as all the interweb instructions directed. As I understand it hooking the dist to the ported vacuum off the right side of the carb should make it a vacuum/mechanical advance, but I can not get it to quit pinging under medium to hard acceleration, as long as I go easy on the throttle all is good up to about 60 after that it starts to ping. Advance not working?
That's what I'm thinking, just need a sounding board.

I'd check the advance at the dizzy, and check for any vacuum leaks on the carb and intake.
I had the same problem when I did it on mine, turned out to be the brand new HEI distributor from 4WDH. It was a piece of junk!
I have done 4 nutter bypasses, and mine was the only one with major problems. I used an MC2100 carb that I rebuilt, and the new dizzy. I went nuts, never thinking a brand new dizzy would be bad.

You might try putting a vaccum pump like a mighty vac on the distributor vac line with it running and the timing light attached and see if it makes a diff. If it does then make sure that port on the carb has vac at it again using the mighty vac again this time just as a gauge. Good luck

Same problem I had with the 4WD dizzy. POS for sure. Yeah, check for vac leaks after you replace all the vac lines if you haven't already. Underhood heat will kill a line quicker than you think with very very small cracks and the like.
81 CJ7, 30 over 258, did the Weber thing now I'm going with a Howell injection kit, 2.5 lift, SRS, and the all important M998 instrument panel with Equus gages. Also have a 71 AMC 360 to rebuild when I kill the 258.
Well not only did i find a vacuum leak (intake gasket) also the "ported" vacuum that I hooked the dizzy up to was does not supply vacuum at all, along with the big one that's supposed to be manifold vacuum, rebuild kit should take care of them issues and on to the next disaster of pulling the driveline apart to find out how badly the PO has neglected it
