after running a race radio (10 meter radio) i will never go back to a CB again. you need a HAM radio operators license ( like $15 a year and an online test thats easy) but the range is unbelievable. we used them down in mexico and can reach a couple hundred miles in the open very easy. they cost abit more but the galaxy radio i have is from the late 70's and still going strong.

i prefer COBRA's for cb's. i have an el cheapo that the wife bought i think its the 27 model and works alright for what it is. if you're not sure what you plan on doing get a cheaper 40 channel one. theres lots of aftermarket and upgrades available later on. also look into CB clubs. in some area's they are very common. i got a really nice base station (house radio) for free after talking with some locals.

I have a Uniden PC76XL that is modified to go into a tuffys security console it works needs mic and antenna/cable I'd have to scrounge up the power connector for it I think it's still in the CJ yet. Free + the ride and it could be yours. Only reason I'm not using it is I have my Cobra 29 that I've had in almost every truck I've owned over the past 10 yrs.

Biggest thing is to get the radio and antenna matched (also refered to as 'tuned')

Having the proper SWR reading is crucial, especially on rigs like the CJ/YJ/TJ/JK with soft/fiberglass tops and not much 'ground plane'

Even a cheap radio will work good if set up properly.

That said, I still prefer the Cobra line. The sound quality is awsome when set up right.

The cobra 29 is available in many different looks and is a great talking radio out of the box and is easy to tune up for even better talk if needed. They are great to have on the highway and I feel required equipment for running trails so you can stay in contact with the group and report if someone is having a problem. There are antenna mounts available for all the different wrangler models.

A little dirty, been sitting in storage since Feb, as far as the mic connection I could put it back in the CB where it belongs for you if ya wanted, just a matter of opening it up and resoldering it , let me know if ya want it

I ran a variety of cheap CBs. Didn't have any issues with them. I now have a Cobra 75WXST. Very small unit. Love it. Haven't had any issues with it thus far. Another vote for Cobras.
