    Default Timing issue?

CJ likes to putter out like its having an asthma attack under load from 2500-3000 RPMs. Its fine at lower, fine at idle. Could it be timing? Other ideas?

could be the advance is not advancing properly. are you trying to retime it or playing with it? is it vacuum or mechanical advance?

Could be loose or sloppy timing chain, could also be a vacuum leak, bad vacuum pot on the dizzy.

Did you do 'Nutter Bypass' on it? If so, you may have the vacuum hose on the wrong port on the carb. Or the carb might need a rebuild.

I think Sr. Beaver is having the same issues with his CJ right now.

Forgot to add, is the air filter clean?

Mine used to act up when the stock filter got plugged with the fine red 'mine dust' we have at the OHV park.

you might also want to check your carb and make sure there is no dirt that got into it.
small grains of dirt can get in and block the high speed jets.just pop the top off of the carb and check the fuelbowl
for any dirt and debris. I dont know how much sand you have where you wheel, but ive seen it happen a hand full of times out here in the desert.

@91YEEPER This is my first carb vehicle, so I need to research the parts names some more so I know wtf you're talking about. haha. I have not tried retiming or adjusting at all yet.

@HillBillE Air filter is clean. Damn near brand new. The engine only has around 1500 miles on it. Its a remanufactured one with the 4 yr 1,000,000 mile warranty on it. Could the timing chain be messed up with so few miles on it? I also think the carb was rebuilt when we had to drop the new-ish engine in because we thought it was the carb messing up (turned out to be a bad previous carb)

@d-rail There's not a lot of sand out here, but theres dust at Rausch Creek. I'm embarrassed to say it, but she's only been once since the rebuild due to a lack of spare tire. Also, I need to learn where the fuel bowl is. Haha

What carb do you have? If you have the electronic Carter BBD you'll be able to tell by the solenoid on the firewall side of the carb it will have a 4 wire(I think) connector going to it. That's where my problems started. I did the Nutter Bypass to get rid of the computer control, worked great, and it is very simple to do. http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/ele...jn-ignition99/ I also did away with the electronic Carter and went with the non-electronic off an 82 CJ set timing at 8* like it says but need to advance it up to about 12* and ran out great, no more sputtering or pinging. also make sure that you have vacuum at the right ports there should be 3 or 4 ported vacuum and one manifold port (the large one) should have engine vac at all times. The ported should only have it at higher RPM. Mine didn't have vacuum on the manifold port(controls PVC valve, so I blew the valve cover gasket) or the one on the TC side of the carb (wasn't controlling the vac advance so the timing was staying at base timing under medium to heavy load)

If ya need anything else feel free to ask.

thanks man. google image search yielded some outstanding pics too. I will keep you guys posted. I'd like to change carbs, but its not financially practical right now and last time we tried switching to a 4 barrel, it ruined the engine
