    Default Axle question

Hello everyone, I am planning on swapping my rear dana 35 for a dana 44. Is it wrong, weird, unheard of to have a front dana 30 and a dana 44 on a tj wrangler, and will it work? Thank you.

i dont see anything wrong with it. in fact many years of the tj had the 30/44 set up factory. my 97 sahara has the 30/44 setup. as far as working? as long as your gears match you shouldn't have any problem. are you pulling a 44 from another tj or are you going to be building one to fit?

No, not weird. Actually it's pretty common. Almost all "Sport" models had the 30/44. My '05 has a D44 rear.

Yep, most rigs have a stronger rear axle than the front. Some later CJ's had the D30/D44 combo, CJ2A's have either a D25 or D27 up front, w/a D41 in the back.

Even the big trucks will have aD60 front and D70 rear , or D44 front w/D60 rear.

As long as the width is good, and the gear ratio the same, you're GTG.

I'm running the D30/D44 in my CJ right now!

Don't forget about the Ford 8.8. It can be found in tons of older Exploders, has 4.10s, has disc brakes and even a limited-slip. These are plenty common at pick-and-pull junkyards.

And they are stronger (in the 31 spline factory form) than the D44.
