Default D44 out of Wagoneer into 99 TJ

Been tryin to find a D44 to put up front on my TJ. I found one on E-Bay for $180.00 that came out of a Wagoneer. Wondering if this will work for me and if so could I do a high steer conversion and keep my discs?

Yes, it can be done. You'll need some Ford spindles/hubs/rotors, and a pair of Chev flat top knuckles or a set of machined knuckles. (for the high steer)

You may be ble to do it with the Waggy outers, but it will give you a 6 lug bolt pattern. Using the F150 stuff will give you a 5 on 5.5 lug pattern.

That means converting the rear axle to match (differnt shafts or spacer/adapters) and getting all new wheels.

Lots of guys do it. I just sold a set of Chev flat top knuckles to my buddy Chad, he's putting a Waggy D44 w/high steer under his XJ.

Probably got that backwards. Been a while since I looked up the conversion. I lost my part #'s and parts list when my other laptop crashed.

ETA: from what I can tell from Chads posts, you use a mid '80's F150 hub and the Waggy spindle on the Chev knuckles. That's if you wnt a 5 on 5.5 lug pattern.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you think the D44 from the wagoneer is the best way to go? What is most practical? Dont want to spend my money on something without knowing all the options. I have an 8.8 in the rear already.

Strengthwise, I think a HP D30 with good shafts would be your best bet.

The HP D30 is (according to the web research I've done) is damn near as strong as the LP D44.

Plus, they came under the later model XJ's, so the brackets are there, ready to bolt up under your TJ.

Here's a good read on the pro's/con's of a D44 under an XJ (same front end design as the TJ)

What year of wagoneer did this come out of? Is it a drivers side drop or pass side drop? I would stick with a HP 30 if you have one over a LP 44. Just my .02

The steering from an XJ, TJ, MJ, ZJ, and YJ are all the same. None of them came with hi steer. You will need an aftermarket hi steer setup, such as the Tera Hi Steer or something similar. You can do a WJ steering setup. Not too hard. You get hi steer and bigger brakes too.

I could be wrong, but I thought 4.88s were the deepest you could go in a D30.
