    Default Atlas 4 speed

Just browsing Advance Adapter's website and noticed the Atlas 4 speed is now available with an 11.70:1 gear ratio. What's next?

Worthless and I am speaking 'progressively' of gear ratios beyond about 5:1....

    Worthless?

But what if I want to run 54" tires with a diesel and never touch the throttle?

Few years ago I was leading a group in Moab and one of the guys was having trouble keeping up in spite of having one HELLVA built Jeep. He was doing a LOT of shifting up, down and in the transfer case. He has just got his rig out of the builder where they had installed the Atlas...10.34:1, he had an automatic and 5.13 or 5.38 gears and 37" tires.

I heard later that he finally blew up his engine shortly after Moab.

You are dead on. The Jeep rags are the worst offenders. That said you have to FOLLOW THE MONEY! And that leads straight to the fact they are in business to make money, which is fine. But I can assure you there are a a bunch of guys out there that run out and buy every do-dah and go fast goodie that hits the pages and of course after dropping X thousands of bucks all they are gonna do is tell you how good it is.

Like the END ALL BE ALL of suspension systems, the air bag setup for Jeeps. Did it work? Yes and No, I spent a week with those guys in Moab. While I NEVER said a word, my short arm did everything they did and they would NOT do Rritchett Canyon or any other 4+ level trail. Much more to say, but I will leave it at this.

    Sounds GOOD to me...

The Jeep 4.0 is not a high rev engine, in fact to run that kind of gear you need some tall tires and a high rev mill that has a torque curve that comes alive above 2500 rpm.

I have looked at this and put pencil to paper. Wanna run a 4.0L and gearing in the 5's then your transfer case should should be between about 4.0 and the Atlas 5.44 w/37/39 tires and still have yourself a DD (all other things being equal).

That said I often found the 4.0 in my Rubicon TC a bit too low for some trails with my 37's and 4.88's.

Personally I like gearing options but with a hard look towards reality. When one looks at the type of off roading they do most and weather or not the jeep is a DD, part time trail rig or full out buggy tends to lead the cause. I usually aim at keeping the drivability of the vehicle a higher priority so I err on the conservative side of gearing. I run 4.10s in my CJ8 with a 360/5speed and 35s. I have a NorthWestFabs crawl box for the low and slow stuff but I don't get "stuck" with the issue of 4high is too high and 4low is way to slow as some with 4to1 tcases get. Just my thoughts.
