    Default NP 231 Exploded View

Does anyone here have an exploded view of the NP 231? The rear output shaft seal is constantly breaking and I'm wondering if maybe I put it back together wrong? Every time I replace it I pull out pieces of the rubber seal. This is driving me nuts. I'm not entirely sure if my output shaft is bent or not.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Here's the info: 2001 TJ 4 cyl. 2.5 inch lift with Rubicon springs and T case lowering kit. T case is a 96 NP 231 off of a Cherokee. It does not have the tail cone over the output shaft, but has long rubber boot that covers the output shaft and slip yoke on the d/shaft.

You have the new Quadra Tec parts mag? It has an exploded view on page 325.

Do you put any oil or grease on the seal when you put it in ?

Oh we got us a friggin comedian! Thanks, but that's not quite what I was after.

Sin, yeah I looked at that one but it's different than mine. My NP 231 doesn't have that back tail cone, just a rubber boot.

Wright, yes I usually do wipe some oil on the seal.

Can you take a pic of your tcase? I can't see a 231 not having a tail cone. Unless it has a SYE in it, but should still have some sort of "cone." Maybe I'm just confused?

I am thinking that your output shaft may either be bent, or maybe a little chewed up. If it destroyed the first seal, it may have been grooved from the metal around the seal. Then when you replaced the seal, the grooved shaft just chewed it up again.

Easist way to check for a bent shaft is to chock all 4 tires. Remove the rear DS, start it up, put it into gear (that's why you chock all the tires). You should be able to see if the shaft is spinning normally, or you'll see an oblong pattern when it spins.
