    Default Brakes Pissing me Off

So the other day I went to jump in the CJ and lo and behold the floor board is covered in brake fluid. Great, need to replace the master. So I picked up a new one from Orielly and swapped it out today. Now after bench bleeding twice and bleeding all four corners three times, I've next to no brakes and the brake warning light is on. Anything else I should be looking at? I'm not seeing any bubbles, but I guess they may not have made thier way to the bleeder yet.

you can try to reverse the fill by filling the lines throught the bleeders. just keep an eye on the fliud level. and you you won't have to pump the brakes! that way you will know for sure that there is now air in the system

You can narrow down where the issue is by taking a needle nose vise grips and pinch of the rubber brake hoses, push and hold brake pedal, and have someone take the vise grips off one at a time and you will feel the pedal drop. If the first one doesn't drop much, let up on the pedal and put it back on, then repeat till pedal drops significantly and that's where you air issue is. I've also had the proportioning valve stick which will give you a very soft pedal.

    This^^^^

Check the pin on the prop valve, if it's sticking out, push it in.

On my CJ, I usually do a 'gravity' bleed. That is, fill the master, then crack each bleeder, letting it flow a little.

Once I get straight fluid coming out, then I do a 'pedal pump' bleed.

I didn't think about checking the prop valve. I'll check it out in the morning when I have some light and not so frustraded. Now it's just time for BEER. I'll also give it a gravity bleed. I don't know if the 6 will be quite as helpful as she was today. If not I guess I can alway voluntold my daughter.

Well it's not the prop. The pin was in. I'll continue to bleed and see what happens. I had the 6 out there pumping the pedal and got the warning light out. There seems to be a crap load of air in the rear, especially the right rear. When she pushes I get more of a burping than I do of straight fluid and am just getting an intermittent warning light. I seem to get more air out when I have the pin locked open.

After bench bleeding the m/c three time and pushing damn near a gallon of brake fluid thru the rears and still not getting anywhere, I've given up, for today anyway. It seems like the m/c is sucking air in from somewhere. There are no leaks that I can find, and after crawling my ass under the Jeep for over an hour I would think I would have found it by now. I'm going to try a different m/c tomorrow and see what happens. I'm thinking that maybe it's pulling air thru the cap or something along those lines.

Could very well be a bad MC, and that can be frustrating, as it's the last thing you expect!

The cap shouldn't be a problem, at least not with air getting in.

But, the O-rings in the front, where the push rod from the pdeal goes in, could be.

Check the firewall/floorboard for any leakage from the MC.

I guess I'll have to wait another day. The dumb ass I spoke to last night never ordered my master from thier warehouse. I hate lousy service. Unfortunately it seems to be the norm any more. I did try yet again to bleed the master I had and discovered that while the chamber for the rear will bleed just fine, the front is doing nothing.

Sin, most likely telling you nothing you don't already know or have not tried, but I will go thru it like I have been doing it on cars, truck, tractors you name it for ever and a day it seems.

Lid off MC, all the brake bleeders closed.

Pump brakes slowly adding any fluid if the level goes down, then top off your MC

Go to pass side rear bleeder, now attached the rubber hose you picked up at the store. That hose is sitting in a coke bottle about 1/3 or so full of fluid, hose is at the bottom. Tell 'step and fetch it' to pump it to the floor, slowly and hold it on the floor, sit coke bottle down with hose in it and in the brake fluid. You get up and check the MC, top off if needed. Ran around and check your coke bottle, hose still under the BF level, then tighten the bleeder valve.

Run back to the MC and have your helper slowly release the brake pedal, add BF to top off.

Run back to the coke bottle, open bleeder valve and have the press BP, note if there are any air bubble coming out of hose and bubbling up thru the BF.

repeat process until no bubbles making sure to keep MC topped off.

Go to drivers rear wheel, repeat process...

    Go to passenger front wheel

    repeat process

finish up with driver front wheel.

Drive and enjoy and note how it stops on a dime and will leave change. I guarantee it...I have never paid for a brake job on anything in my life.
