find a 727 or 999 with a 4.2/4.0/304 bell housing and swap it in.

If you can find a bellhousing, the A518 (46RH) is a stout trans. Dodge put them behind the Cummins for a while.

What kind of auto are you looking to put in? Is there any specific one that you have in mind? That is a big part of how involved it'll be.

Check out Stu Olsens site, he has write ups on both a TJ and a YJ, for swapping in an AW4 from a cherokee.

Jforse just did this swap on his TJ, and I gave him a hand. Not to bad to do.

The AW4 is a bullet proof auto, and there are plenty of them out there.

The AW4 was going to be my suggestion. Didn't know if there was anything else you were looking at. Stu has a great site for Jeep tech.

AW4 is auto trans found in 87-01 Cherokees. As for exactly which one you need (year wise) I don't know. I have a link or something bookmarked on my computer about this swap. I'll have to look a little bit.

    '87-'01 Jeep XJ's (Cherokees)

    Yes

    Yes

Stu's stuff is extremely detailed, so check out his swap write ups. Jforse did the electrical stuff on his TJ (I suck at electrical!) and said it was pretty easy.

The AW4 never came in a YJ or TJ, so it wouldn't be a striaght up 'bolt in' affair, but they are one of the best auto's out there for Jeeping, hence the swaps and write ups.

I'm not sure what auto's came in the YJ's, but finding one of them should be a easy swap.
