Default 2000 TJ will only move in 4th gear.

I need help diag.ing this problem. the jeep will only move in 4th gear. Has anyone heard of this problem. I figure its not the clutch cause it has enough bite to move and stall. cant be the transfer case because its moves. Any help with this will be much appreciated.

sounds like the secondary shaft is siezed in the tranny. 4th should still be a locked up straight thru on the main shaft so it would work but the other gears use the 2nd shaft and gears to get its gearing so if that shaft is froze then no go

I agree with Irish, either that or bent shift forks.

Does the tranny shift into any other gears?

the shiftlever seems to go into gear but, when clutch is let out all there is is a slight vibration in all gears but 4th. no movement at tires except for 4th.

I have had a seized shaft before and just before it freezes up it will squeal like a pig. So did you hear any sounds. When did this occur, while driving or when shifting, or pulled into driveway and all was fine, but next morn it was fubar?

Check to see if tranny has oil in it. if not or extremely low then good chance it internal, shafts, gears, bearings.

How do you know the transfer case is OK? Try putting transfer case in Neutral...

I have had this happen not just once but lots of times. Only 2x has it ever been a seized shaft or a puked tranny. What has it been? Shift linkage internal and or external to trans or transfer case.

In other words elimnate the simple stuff before you tear down a trans.

Sadly, I didnt have custody of the vehicle and only saw that it had been moved a few times. When and for how long is lost on me. From what I was able to gather, it seems that it was parked then the next time, fubar.

I didnt have the propper tools to get to the fill port but loosened the drain and there does appear to have fluid in it.

I tried all possible selections of the transfer case with no change in symtoms except in neutral the jeep didnt move in 4th either( to be expected)
