    Default Couple of CJ/XJ questions

    1. Would an XJ D44 Bolt in to a 78 CJ? Are the perches the same width?

    2. Would a LockRight from a 92 XJ Dana 30 fit a 78 CJ Dana 30?

    3. What can you CJ guys tell me about the I6 232? What Tranny/T-Case goes with it?

    4. How impossable would it be to swap an 4.0 I6 from a 92 XJ into a 78 CJ? Would I have to use the whole Drive train?

Answers to 1 and 4 are do you weld or have a buddy that welds. Spring perches easy to cut off and reweld. Um and xj is soa. So either fab track bar mount on bbody side or flip perches and go sua which requires no track bar. As for motor swap its been done. Welding new mounts and wiring trickiest. Might as well drop an 8 in considering the hassle. Fuel injection in the 4.0 makes it superior especially in offcamber situations. Well not much for answer but opinions

I weld and have a welder. I should have mentioned the CJ I am looking at is already a SOA conversion....YEA.....just looking at options right now, the CJ is $600 with a running 232. I don't know anything about the 232 other than its a dog at a whopping 100HP and 185FTLBS tourque

1: With a little fab work, pretty sure the mount width is different, not to mention the lug pattern. Adapter/spacers or new axle shafts in a 5 on 5 1/2 pattern solve that.

2: Yep, same carrier, so it'll fit. Just swapped the Aussie from my CJ into my HPD30 on the XJ.

3: Decent motor, lots of torque. Not going to win any drag races. I think the tranny's were the T 14, T 15, and the T-cases were the D20.

4: You can use any part of the drivetrain, but you'll need the 'brain boxes' with it. ECU, tranny controller if it has one (depends on the year) and if you use the T-case, it's a driver side drop, CJ's are pass side drop. Using the complete drivetrain wouldn't be bad. ie: axles and all.

If you use just the 4.0L, you'll need something for the CPS, which is on the bell housing and reads off the flywheel. They make a kit to run it off the vibration damper in front.

If you use the 4.0L and tranny, then you just need to adapt for the T-case, or get a STAK/Atlas/etc.

Thanks Frank! I knew I had seen them, when I looked at dropping a 4.0L into my CJ. Just couldn't recall 'who' had them!

Had the set up I had been an AW4 tranny, I would have gone through the hassle of swapping. But the motor/tranny/T-case came from a ZJ.

Looking back, I still should have done the swap!
