ok, my jeep runs great. the things is from time to time i get in and turn the key and nothing happens. it has a new batt. and the starter and alt. works. If I take the cables off the batt. and put them back on, i get power. sometimes it will start after that, other it will not. When this happens, the gauges dont move and look as if i dont even have the key in. any ideas? is a 2003 GC

Is the key one of those with the little chip in it? Maybe something is going wrong with the sensor showing that the key has been inserted? I know ours has a light gray colored key that has the chip and some that did not have the chip were darker colored or black.

2003 GC, that jeep is heading toward 9 years old if it was built in '02. Check your battery cables for resistance or just replace them.

Is it a manual or auto trans? The clutches on the manuals have a switch that can go bad and not allow it to turn over.

I saw this on a ford escape one time. It might have a park sensor and that sensor cannot be activated for it to start if there is a short somewhere in the wiring harness. On the escape it was short in the trailer light harness.

Also check your fuse links, from the batt that supply power to the dash.
Also make sure you have a good ground source to the body.

I don't have the 03 FSM, bit I did check the one I have for 04, I don't think there were too many changes between the two years. Check and clean all conections in your starter circuit to include the park/neutral switch on the tranny. If it continues you may just have a starter relay going bad, change it and see what happens. If it continues test your park/neutral switch. Here's the testing procedure from the 04 FSM

    DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - PARK/NEUTRAL
    POSITION SWITCH
The center terminal of the park/neutral position
switch is the starter-circuit terminal. It provides the
ground for the starter solenoid circuit through the
selector lever in PARK and NEUTRAL positions only.
The outer terminals on the switch are for the backup
    lamp circuit.

    SWITCH TEST
To test the switch, remove the wiring connector.
Test for continuity between the center terminal and
the transmission case. Continuity should exist only
when the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
Shift the transmission into REVERSE and test
continuity at the switch outer terminals. Continuity
should exist only when the transmission is in
REVERSE. Continuity should not exist between the
    outer terminals and the case.
Check gearshift linkage adjustment before replacing

    a switch that tests faulty.

Since you are having an intermittent problem you may have to test a few times.
