is it TDC on intake or exhaust stroke? it makes a difference..
also what motor is in it?
Good evening,
Ok here is my problem. 3 Weeks ago I took my distributor out to check it. I marked it and put it back. Now it won’t start. I have tried everything I know. I took it TDC made sure it was pointing at #1 or at least close to it. It turns over just fine, sometimes it back fires through the carb and sometimes out the exhaust. Thanks for the help.

Your timing chain could have possibly broke.

X3 if it's TDC on the Exh stroke it would put you're dist 180* off and cause a no start with backfiring, done it many times. Hand crank the timing mark up to 0* pull cap and see where rotor is pointing. Pull dist rotate 180 and try again see what happens, bet it starts right up

Yep, distributor firing at 180 deg.
Solution #1;
If you don't want to remove the distributor again,Then do this;
Remove spark plug #1 (Also remove all spark plugs wires from the plugs)
after removing the #1 cyl.plug, Put your finger blocking the plug hole, Have someone turn the
engine when you feel lot of air pressure in you finger that mean the piston is coming
to the right TDC.
Now take a wrench and turn the crank slow to the TDC mark, Remove the distributor cap
and see where the rotor is pointing(You might have to move the distributor a little to adjust)
That going to be you first spark plug firing location,Put that wire to # 1 plug and follow the
firing order for the rest.
After crank up you need a timming light to adjust timming.
Good luck.

@warrior That's a damn good idea, I've never thought of that. Just gotta remember that it's adjusted for next tune up.

thanks for the info. It is a 258. I have tried most of this. I will try it all again when I get home from GA next week.
