I would think it was the u joint protesting the end of its life.
Ok so played a little in my jeep today and heard a strange noise when in 4low.
The 4 wheel drive was engaged and working but heard a lound bang twice, things still worked, went back to 2 wheel though.
Month or so ago rear driveshaft blew out and we limped a mile or so in 4 wheel, heard a loud bang then jeep stopped fordward momemtum.
Had new driveshaft installed and mechanic cracked diff and everything looked good with gears and in trans case and all, been driving it fine since I got it back.
Jeep drives fine all the time --just worried about that noise we heard when in 4 wheel.

Yeti said it might be a u joint---for the front driveshaft, right???

U Joints are pretty easy to check. Grab your drive shaft and see if it moves around. If you've never changed them, it might be a good idea to anyway. They are cheap. If you don't have a press or a vice let me know I have both and you can do it here.

Were your wheels turned when you heard the pop? Have you checked/replaced your front axle u-joints? Might be something else you will want to check while you are checking your front driveshaft.
Hmm we were going down a little rocky path the second time we heard it.
Thanks for the input Rob.
