    Default 1953 Willy's

Okay: I am looking at buying this. I can pick it up for cheap but it would have to be my DD for at least 3-6 months until I can afford another YJ or older TJ. My commute is 86 miles round trip. Anyone have any experience with driving an older Jeep and what are the pit falls.

    Great looking jeep.
I wouldn't want to DD for that many miles though.

You might ask your questions on earlycj.com. That's a site dedicated to flatties and short cj5's.

Owned a '70 cj5 with the v-6. I can say that you will not be going very fast, but you will get there with no issues every day. I used mine on a daily basis and 4-wheeled it all the time. If it was the 4cyl I would strongly advise not getting it for a DD. The biggest thing is ensuring it is mechanically sound and it could go a very long time.

Brakes are the worst thing with the Willys, if you get them right you can expect white knuckles from time to time. If they are jacked up expect to go bald!! Steering, if it has a steering stabilizer then ask why. More than likely the steering needs to be rebuilt, easy day and parts are available and cheap- takes a day to repair everything from the steering box to tie rods.

~40 miles in the morning and ~40 COB is not bad, just leave very early and change all the oils regularly.

Nice looking Jeep and they are a blast.... Good luck with it.

Looks like a great ride but I don't know that I would want to rock that thing 80+ miles a day.

On the more important note, how much and where at if you don't get it.

But like was said, 80 mile commuting isn't going to be gentle on you in it.
