What is he looking for? An XJ is going to be the cheapest bet as far as decent condition, whereas a JK is going to be one of the most expensive options. XJs are cheap, and also cheaper to modify (generally speaking), but TJs have the largest aftermarket, and are the most modifiable..... Let us know, not only the budget we have to work with, but also what is this buddy of yours looking for.

I love(d) my ZJ. Once it gets back on the road I'll love it again.

I would not suggest getting a ZJ if you're new to wheeling and auto mechanics though. It's quite different driving a LWB Jeep on a trail with a bunch of SWB's. on top of that the after market for ZJ's is really just starting.

Find out his $$ limit and if he wants Wrangler style or XJ style. I can do a few searches for him.

Almost anything can be under a budget if you plan right.

My XJ (aka Cowbeast) was an under $3k build from purchase to selling.
    Bought for $450
Lift $500 (4.5" Rough Country full replacement)
Steaks and drinks for lift party $100
    Brakes all around $800
    Tires/Rims $600 32" BFG M/T's on Mickey Thompson Classic II's.
Fender Trimming by Deadman about $20 worth of cutting wheels.
Wheeled snot piss out of it.
    New LCA mounts $100
Sold one year later for $600

The FSJ I'm still under $2k in it. About to go over that when I replace the transmission.

Georgia's YJ is a good example of a budget build.
    Bought $1000
    1" BL: $120
    1" MML: $80
1st set of tires and wheels: $500
2nd set of tires and wheels post larger lift: $700
    4" Rough Country: $450
    Rock Sliders Rough Country: $130
    Engine Skid: $250
    Diff guards: $50 each

We've done a few other things but it doesnt play into the budget build portion of it.

CJ's - Cool Factor, parts harder to obtain, ok aftermarket
YJ - your the [email protected]@rd child, but good after market support
TJ - Everyone has one, widest aftermarket support, if you shop around you can find the late 90's models cheap.
JK - Most expensive, aftermarket is still expensive on it, but a 2" BB can fit you on 35's if I remember correctly.
XJ - another of the stepkids, aftermarket is decent but wanting for more on choices of products.
FSJ - Cool Factor, hard to obtain parts, very few aftermarket providers

Personal choice if its just him, I would go TJ.
If he does a lot of camping or expects passengers plus gear a lot, I would go with an XJ.
If I wasn't in love with my FSJ, I would probably go with another XJ build since the wife has a YJ if we want a "top down".

There is a guy on BWJ that lives up my way that is selling his already built XJ, I would honestly consider it at $4500.
I know there are a few TJ's in the area already built for sale as well. Its just a question of does he want a prebuilt one, or would he want to do the work himself?
