ok other sites say buy a new jeep lol. or find a salvage jeep and use for a doner for all the parts.
Not sure how hard it is, if you get all the parts you need. ie The head, all fuel injection parts like the fuel rail, lines and such, the fuel pump may need changed, here are a couple EXPENSIVE kits.

I'm thinking buy a 2004 or so engine and tranny with the computer and wiring for about the same or less money, certainly less than the $2000 one.
This is a good Tech post I'll put up and see what the fella's say.

I want to do the same swap into my 258 - looking at dropping in a Cherokee with the 4.0 and fuel injection - lots of info over on jeepforum, but I'd just hate to park my DD for the length of time that it would take to do the swap, especially with spring right around the corner!

I'm currently doing a 350 into my four banger. it's not a Fuel Ingection going with the carb. Reason for that is found a donor 350 with transmission for cheap and in good condition. will post progress.
Personally I think it's cheaper and easier to drop a 4.0 in. If you gather all the parts and study up on it, it can easily be done in 1 weekend. I pulled 258 through D300(complete unit) on a saturday and dropped in 4.0, T-18,clocked D300 on Sunday. Cut n welded rear driveshaft and rolled to work on Monday. Only had non-mechanical father in-law helping.
I've never heard good results from the FI kits on the 258, that's why I didn't go that route.

I would say howel TBI it not to expensive and easy to do...If you are good with a wrench proably 3 to 4 hrs. It will be going on my cj at the end of the summer cause i dont drive mine much during the winter...
We found a donor Jeep for Georgia's. Picked it up for $800, it was the same year and engine, so it was pretty much a take it out clean it up and put it in. Made most of our money back off selling the rest of the parts off and giving what was left of the frame/axles some rollers to the guy that helped us so he could do mock-ups on it.

Damien is running the Howell kit on his YJ and in his words, other than putting in DUI distributor, he says it was the best thing he has done to his Jeep. IMO, go with the Howell kit. They have already done all of the leg work for you. You are also saving on running around looking for parts and then taking the chance that those used parts might be any good.
My friend started a mega squirt swap, using 4.0L stuff on a 258YJ. It ended up being a royal PIA. He canned the mega squirt and put all stock componets on it inc a 4.0L head. It's running but we've yet to see how well. Another friend swapped a complete 4.0L into his 89 YJ and it was straight foward and simple, it runs great and has had no iussues. IMHO it's best to swap a complete 4.0L into it. Buy a wrecked donor YJ and goto town, they are cheap and make the swap go simple and quick. You also know you will have everything you need. If you feel you must use the 258, just use it's crank and rods into the 4.0L block and stroke the thing to a 4.5L![]()
