Default Last nail in the coffin (for now)

Winch replacement parts should be here tomorrow. I told Smittybilt about the spool release handle and the spool guard-bars rusting and they sent replacements for free (word). Also ordered a new controller, so all I should need is a new cable or synthetic

Get the synthetic, the difference, besides weight is, the synthetic will actually fall to the ground if it snaps, while the cable becomes a runaway snake. I've seen both of them break, and believe me, you don't want to be around the cable when it goes.

I'm aware of what happens, just depends on what I can afford at teh time because I'll need to replace the fairlead at the same time. Phooey.

I had the exact same thing happen to mine. Can you send me the contact info you used for Smittybilt?

The rumors that an aluminum hawse is needed for synthetic rope have been proven false. In fact, I went to an aluminum hawse when I converted to a synthetic rope but later re-installed my roller fairlead. There's little to no chance the synthetic rope can be pulled up into the corners of a roller fairlead. I know of no one left in my group that still uses an aluminum hawse which just creates more wear on rope... both synthetic and wire. Really.

I wouldn't spend the money to change it if my roller wasn't gouged up. I'm worried that the synth will roll over a shard or something and create additional and unnecessary wear. Maybe I'll just spring for another roller

Did Smittybilt charge you for the remote or send it for free? I had them send me a second remote in Feb and it was no charge. If you feel like spending a few bucks on switches (nice one available through OTRATTW, on MJ) you can take your old remote and make a sweet in cab control.
A simple misunderstanding gets a lot less simple when you add choppers and a SWAT team.
